volunteer experience

Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea

From May of 2018 to June of 2019 I was a Volunteer Naturalist at the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea, in Sidney, BC. This allowed me to nurture my love and interest in my local oceans, as well as work with groups of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. My role was to create a welcoming environment, where one could easily learn and enjoy their time at the aquarium. I am hoping to return to the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea in the future, to continue nurturing my love of our oceans, and to share that love with others.

Guatemala

From July to August of 2016 I traveled Guatemala with World Pilgrims, experiencing the local culture and volunteering at a remote highland school and several other organizations. This was an absolutely life changing experience that ignited my love of international travel, and the learning experiences that come with it. I created lifelong memories and bonds with those I traveled with, as well as our local guides. I hope to one day return to Guatemala to create more memories and continue making a difference in the world.

(Note: all volunteer work was done at the request of those we volunteered with. No jobs were taken away from locals, and monetary donations were made to help continue the amazing work the organizations do.)

Oak Bay United Church

From 2016 to 2019 I volunteered at Oak Bay United Church, where I have attended worship and summer programming for most of my life. My roles varied, from Sunday School classes, organization and cleaning of storage rooms, summer programming, to sound operation during service (before being hired officially). My time spent in my church has helped grow my community engagement, and being involved in the wider church community has allowed me to travel, meet new people, and have completely unique experiences. My love of this community helps shape who I am as a person, and how I go through my life and interact with others; with love, understanding, and the overall goal of inclusion and equality. My time spent volunteering at Oak Bay United Church has made this a true home away from home for me.
